1925 – An Englishman in Paris

May 15 @ 8.00 pm - 10.00 pm

Join us for a journey to Paris in 1925 to experience the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held from April to October. It sent ripples around the world, perhaps even shockwaves. Ultimately it even gave its name to the Art Deco style that we love.

But what exactly did the English and Australians make of all the fuss? The Allies may well have fought together in WWI but the French and British remained fierce economic rivals. The British Department of Overseas Trade sent a crack team of experts to report back on what they found. Australian department stores and Sydney Ure Smith’s The HOME magazine were the arbiters of good taste for the Australian household – what did they make of the new designs on show?

As we celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Exhibition, ADMSA Committee member, Barry Clare, shares what the British found in Paris and how the style was received down under. Prepare to see some applied art and classic Anglo arrogance.
